Maori Investments Limited is an Investment Company operating under the Companies Act 1993 and was first registered in 1967.
It has an issued capital of 128,801 shares divided amongst 5,500 shareholders all of whom are Maori. The largest single shareholder holds 2,035 shares. In terms of the Company's constitution shares may only be transferred to blood line relatives of the original shareholders. The Company has a policy of maintaining a minimum of 10 shares.
The Company has its registered office in Kawerau with a staff of four who are responsible for all secretarial, accounting, investment and share register duties. The Company has six directors who retire by rotation every three years.
The company's main operational asset is the Tarawera Forest 29,000 hectares of forest of which 21,000 hectares is planted in pine forest. adjacent to Kawerau. The forest is owned by a wholly owned subsidiary. Tarawera Land Co Ltd and is subject to two Forestry Rights, the 1st to Tiaki Plantations and the 2nd to Kaingaroa Timberlands. A substantial part of Maori Investments Ltds income arises from dividends paid by Tarawera Land Co Ltd from the rental it receives on the Forestry Rights. The value of Tarawera Land Co Ltd is 52% of the gross assets of Maori Investments Ltd with the remaining assets largely comprising investments invested in a widely diversified portfolio of New Zealand and Offshore financial instruments.
The company's main liability is for unclaimed dividends which in the main arise from inherited unknown owners who formed the original shareholders of the Company in 1967.
The Board has a policy of paying maximum dividends from the net profit proportionate to sound business practice in managing the assets.
Maori Investments Limited has exclusive rights for issuing permits for any activity on Mount Putauaki (Mount Edgecumbe). Permits for walking up Mount Putauaki can be obtained from our office at a cost of $4 per vehicle. If you require a mountain permit on the weekend please notify the office in advance to make arrangements. Vehicle access to the summit is prohibited.
The walk up the mountain on average takes 1hr 15mins, and on a fine day you are rewarded with breathtaking views to the south of Mount Ruapehu and Mount Ngaruhoe.
Tarawera Land CompanyMaori Investments Limited can also issue permits for access to the Tarawera Falls, Tarawera Outlet, collecting watercress, firewood and eeling. There is a cost of $4 per vehicle. TLC permits can also be obtained from the Kawerau Information Centre who are open 7 days a week.
Forest ClosureThe Tarawera Forest is closed from 1st November to 1st March for all recreational activities due for the high fire risk season
